Yacht Daily Maintenance: The Captain's Top 10 Daily Checklist

Regular maintenance is crucial for ensuring yacht safety and preserving its value. Following a professional daily inspection checklist can effectively prevent many potential issues.

1. Engine System Checks

  • Oil Inspection: For four-stroke engines, regularly check the oil level and condition. Engine oil not only lubricates but also aids in cooling and cleaning the internal components. Replacement is typically recommended every 12 months or after 100 hours of operation.

  • Cooling System: Ensure the seawater strainer is clean and check that the water discharge indicator stream from the outboard is normal, as this visually reflects the water pump's operational status.

2. Key Hull and Fitting Conditions

  • Sacrificial Anodes: Check the wear level of the zinc anodes on the hull, propeller, and other key locations. They protect other important metal components by corroding preferentially. Ensure the anodes are clean and not painted over, which would render them ineffective.

  • Seacocks and Hose Clamps: Inspect all seacocks (through-hull valves), connecting hoses, and stainless steel hose clamps located on the hull bottom for tightness and signs of aging. Failure of these components could lead to serious water ingress.

3. Electrical and Energy Systems

  • Battery Maintenance: Keep the battery surfaces clean, terminals secure, and ensure adequate charge levels. Avoid overcharging to prevent the battery from overheating and increasing risks.

  • Fuel Management: Try to purchase high-quality fuel from reputable suppliers. For gasoline containing ethanol, pay special attention to the condition of the fuel-water separator and regularly drain any accumulated water from the bottom of the filter.

Meticulous daily inspections allow you to set sail with greater peace of mind. When considering a new yacht for sale, it's worth asking the shipyard or dealer if they provide detailed maintenance training and checklists.
